abstract = "Remnants of vegetation in urban perimeters provide better
environmental conditions to local biological diversity and quality
of life for the population. The objective of this study was to
appraise the Vegetation Cover Index (VCI) of urban perimeter of
Erechim, Rio Grande do Sul for the years of 2010 to 2015. Mapping
was carried out by means on high-resolution satellite images and
with the support of Geographic Information System (GIS). The
results of this study showed a reduction of 229.98 hectares of
vegetation area. This reduction is mainly associated with
increased urbanization through allotments encouraged by public
housing policies. A future scenario for Erechims urban area shows
a tendency to reduction of the vegetation cover, unless new
projects to encourage the maintenance and conservation of these
urban forest remnants. The VCI of Erechims urban perimeter reduced
3.23%, being that for the year of 2015 this rate was 28.40%. About
the total of 58 districts: 36 keep their stable VCI; 19 districts
reduced their VCI; and 3 districts increased their VCI. Expansion
of urban areas, besides of reduce the vegetation, contributed
effectively in the disorderly occupation of the city, generating
negative impacts on environment and consequently in the quality of
                         life for the local population.",
